You would have been hard-pressed to find a more enthusiastic group of basketball players than the group of students who took the court at Louisa County High School on Thursday, May 24th.

That day, LCHS hosted a “Lions Together” basketball game for adapted curriculum students at the high school. The game gave students the chance to enjoy the full student-athlete experience. A crowd of proud parents, teachers, community members and students filled the bleachers, and each member of the team was given their very own jersey!

For four quarters, adapted curriculum teachers helped the students navigate around the court and take a few shots, each made basket met with a resounding cheer.

“[The students] were just so excited, so pumped, going up and down the court, making a basket,” said Christina Mehrtens, who teaches adapted physical education through the Piedmont Regional Education Program. “I think they’re really excited just wearing the uniforms. We’re hoping to get more opportunities for them.”

Mehrtens said this year’s matchup was a trial run. In the upcoming school year, the Lions Together team will look to play teams from nearby counties with a similar makeup of students.
