Trevilians Elementary School teacher Jessica Gentry transformed her classroom into a makeshift movie theater on Thursday, September 19th in an exciting initiative to help her students understand the concept of themes in art and stories!

As part of the unique lesson, students were divided into multiple groups and given a couple of options. Some groups opted to choose a theme — such as humor or adventure — and develop a story around the concept. Then, the groups developed a poster that illustrated their theme.

Other groups rotated amongst five viewing stations, each featuring a different short PIXAR film. After each viewing, the students were tasked with determining the theme of each film and providing evidence for their reasoning!

The lesson helped encourage students to collaborate and to also have fun while learning!

“We’ve been working on themes this week and we’ve practiced with stories,” Gentry said. “What better way to do it than with short films? We wanted that was both fun and engaging. The movie theater just fit right in with the plan for our work!”

To help add even more fun to the lesson, Gentry provided students with replica versions of cash and movie tickets, which could be used to “buy” refreshments and viewing opportunities.

This isn’t Gentry’s first time using unique and innovative approaches to help students understand a concept. Last year, she decorated her classroom to resemble The Jungle football stadium to help students understand sensory words!

Gentry said she enjoys lessons that are fun for students, and most importantly, beneficial to their learning process.

“It’s fun for me to teach lessons like this,” Gentry said. “I think it benefits the students because they’re thinking through it naturally.”
