Louisa County Middle School has partnered with the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond to participate in a powerful initiative called The Butterfly Project.

The Butterfly Project is an initiative focused on memorializing the 1.5 million children who were killed during the Holocaust and honoring its survivors. Through the project, students and educators use art to commemorate and remember all who were impacted.

At the start of the project, students are given biography cards that include information about victims of the Holocaust. Students are encouraged to say the victim’s name out loud as a way of making sure their life story is remembered.

Students then used their artistic talents to paint ceramic butterflies.

Once completed, the hundreds of butterflies will become part of a permanent art installation at the Virginia Holocaust Museum.

The Virginia Holocaust Museum says the art instillation will be located at the entrance of the museum in the near future.
