In response to feedback and collaboration with the field, as well as to legislation passed by the Virginia General Assembly, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has released a Video Guide to the Special Education Evaluation Process for Families as additional guidance to support accurate and consistent eligibility determinations and access to special education services across school divisions. These video modules will provide parents, families, and other stakeholders with a brief but comprehensive overview of the special education process on the following topics: Introduction (Overview of Series), IdentificationEvaluationEligibilityIndividualized Education Program (IEP)ReevaluationEarly Intervention, and What’s Next. Each module is designed to be viewed as a stand-alone resource or viewed in succession.

Parent Involvement Survey

2025-2026 School Year Indicator 8 Parent Survey – due by December 11, 2026

The collection period for the 2025-2026 School Year Indicator 8 Parent Survey has officially begun for all families of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in Virginia. Respondents are encouraged to complete the survey online, as this is the preferred method of submission.

Families choosing the paper option must request one at the Special Education for Families web page and must mail their completed surveys to the VDOE using the address listed on the survey.

 

2025-26 Private School Parent Involvement Survey and Student Perspective Survey – due by December 11, 2026

All students and parents of school-aged children with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in a licensed private school for students in Virginia are encouraged to complete the Virginia Department of Education Private School Parent and Student surveys. The online surveys are the preferred method of submission, which are available using the following links:

Families with more than one child receiving special education services in a licensed private day school should complete a survey for each child. A security feature within the electronic survey submission process requires a different internet browser or device when multiple surveys are submitted.  Links to both surveys are also posted on the VDOE Private Day & Residential Schools web page to provide each LEA with access to share with families. Alternatively, email [email protected] to request print copies of the surveys. Respondents who select print copies will need to mail the surveys to the VDOE at the address listed on the printed survey.
